Saints Tie Game up Four Times, But Lose on Walk off Single in Ninth 7-6

SIOUX FALLS, SD - On four different occasions the St. Paul Saints found themselves trailing the Sioux Falls Pheasants. On four different occasions the Saints managed to tie the game, but they could never get over the hump and in the end a walk-off single by Al Quintana plated the winning run as the Saints lost 7-6 on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

With the game tied at six in the top of the ninth Adam Frost led off with a single for the Saints. Jim Rapoport followed with a sacrifice bunt putting the go ahead run in scoring position. Shane Costa, however, flew out to center and Willie Cabrera struck out looking to end the inning.

The Pheasants cashed in when their lead off man reached in the bottom of the ninth. Cristian Guerrero led off by walking against Reid Mahon. Mark Shorey sacrificed him to second. Jake Taylor then hit a comebacker to Mahon who was able to get Guerrero in a run down for the second out, but he stayed in the run down long enough that Taylor took second. Al Quintana then ripped a single off the glove of shortstop Tanner Townsend scoring the win run.

With the Saints trailing 3-1 in the third Rapoport and Costa led off the inning with walks. With two outs Townsend roped a two-run double tying the game at three.

In the sixth the Saints trailed for the fourth time on the evening at 6-4. Townsend led off with a walk and Jose Hernandez singled him to second. With one out Benji Johnson singled home Townsend to make it 6-5. With two outs Rapoport drove home Hernandez with an RBI single tying the game at six. Rapoport finished the night 2-3 with an RBI, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

It appeared the Pheasants would take the lead in the seventh when Dustin Klabunde, in his second inning of relief, loaded the bases with no out. Klabunde, however, got two force outs at the plate and then a ground out to second to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. He finished the game going 2.2 scoreless innings allowing two hits while walking one intentionally and striking out one.

The same two teams meet on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. in the finale of the three game series. The Saints are TBA and the Pheasants send LHP Peter Gehle (1-2, 9.60). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
