El Paso Diablos News Release
LAREDO, TX - Nelson Teilon hit a mammoth two-run home run in the top of the 13th inning to put the Diablos ahead to stay and give El Paso its first road victory of 2012, a 3-2 win in Laredo over the division rival Lemurs.
For the second straight night, it looked as though El Paso's lack of offense would lead to a road loss. The Diablos did not score off Lemurs starter Leonard Giammanco and put up zeros into the eighth.
Luckily for the Diablos, new starter Juan Peralta was nearly as good. Peralta did allow one run, but surrendered just four hits over his seven innings of work and escaped multiple jams to keep El Paso close. Peralta finished with five strikeouts and did not allow a hit after the fifth frame.
The Lemurs did lead 1-0 into the final two innings, however, thanks to a two-out RBI single from Anthony Scelfo in that fifth inning. Scelfo's hit plated Brian Peterson, who had walked and, surprisingly stolen second base and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Fortunately, this night featured a flipped script for the Diablos. A team that has been plagued by late inning errors and miscues took advantage of two of them from Laredo in the eighth. Maikol Gonzalez reached second on a ground ball off the glove of Lemurs third baseman John Allen and scored when shortstop Jimmy Mojica fielded Enrique Cruz's ground ball but bounced his throw to first, tying the game at one.
The Diablos bullpen, much maligned all year, turned in one of its best performances of 2012, getting scoreless outings from Kyle Cremers and Marcel Prado. Cremers' bottom of the eighth was not without a bit of stress; it took a perfect relay from Teilon to Gonzalez to catcher Patrick Arlis to cut down Mojica attempting to score the go-ahead run on a hit by former Diablo Javier Brito.
The next four full innings went scoreless as both teams stranded runners and missed opportunities to take the lead. Finally, in the top of 13th, Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk and was still at first when Teilon crushed a 1-0 offering completely over the left field wall to give El Paso a two-run advantage.
The Lemurs strung together a rally of their own in the bottom half, scoring a run to make it 3-2 and eventually putting the tying and potential winning runs on base. With two outs, Ronny Morla (2-3) then induced a game-ending ground ball from pinch hitter Kevin Butler to give the Diablos the victory.
El Paso will have an off day Sunday before beginning a three-game series in Kansas City on Monday evening.
