Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 9-4 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.
Wichita scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to go in front 3-0, and held the lead through the end of the game. Juan Richardson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second when C.J. Ziegler reached on an error from third baseman Devin Goodwin. David Peralta hit a groundball up the middle that deflected off of a diving Reid Fronk's glove and into shallow center field. Richardson scored and Ziegler went to third on the RBI double.
Mitch Einertson then hit one-hopper to shortstop that was gloved by Jose Duran. Duran fired home to get Ziegler, but Ziegler slid in underneath catcher Trevor Coleman's tag to give the Wingnuts a 2-0 lead. Coleman and starting pitcher Devin Anderson were ejected following the play. With Daniel Kickham on the mound for Kansas City, Taylor Freeman hit a groundball to second. Fronk attempted to start a double play, but his throw was dropped by Duran and allowed Peralta to score the third run of the inning.
Bubby Williams hit a two-out, ground rule double over the center field fence in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but Wingnuts' starter Josh Lowey escaped further trouble by striking out Kala Ka'aihue with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Lowey earned the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits in five and one-third innings. Lowey walked three and struck out six. Lowey is now 5-0 this season and has won 16 consecutive decisions dating back to last year.
Ziegler cracked a solo home run to left-center with two outs in the bottom of the third, while Jake Kahaulelio hit a two-out, RBI single to center in the fourth to extend the Winguts' lead to 5-2.
Kansas City tacked on a run in the fifth on a Williams' fielder's choice, and then put the tying runs on base against Lowey with one out in the sixth. Nick Walters relieved Lowey and ended the inning when Fronk hit into a groundball double play at second base.
Walters, Jared Simon, and Robert Roth combined for two and two-thirds scoreless relief innings.
Wichita added two more runs in the sixth. With two outs and no one on base, Ryan Khoury drew a walk and stole second base. Jake Kahaulelio reached first on an infield single. On the same play, Goodwin's throw from third went into foul territory and allowed Khoury to score. John Rodriguez ripped a single through the right side that scored Kahaulelio with the Wingunts' seventh run.
Khoury hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mike Conroy in the bottom of the eighth, while David Peralta drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning for Wichita's final two runs. Peralta and Ziegler each walked three times.
Kansas City scored it's fourth run on a Brandon Jones double down the left field line in the top of the ninth.
The Wingnuts' offense totaled 12 walks in the win. Five of the nine runs were unearned against Kansas City due to three errors.
Anderson took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on two hits in one-plus inning. Anderson walked one and struck out none.
