AMARILLO, Texas - The Sox scored five runs in the third inning on their way to a 9-6 win over the RailCats on Saturday night to take the three-game series. The 'Cats have dropped three straight road games as well as three straight series on the road and their record sits at 13-15.
For the second straight night, the RailCats took a 1-0 lead as Craig Maddox led off the second with a triple and was driven home on Mike Rohde's double. Maddox's hit was the 200th of his career.
Just like on Friday night, Amarillo answered quickly, this time against 'Cats starter Morgan Coombs. In the bottom of the second, one run scored on a passed ball and another on a run-scoring single by Harrison Kain to give the Sox a 2-1 lead.
Rohde hit a sac fly in the third to tie the game, but the Sox responded with five runs in the bottom of the third, capped by a three-run homer by Adam Buschini to make it 7-2. Matt Tucker hit a solo shot in the fourth to send the RailCats into an 8-2 hole for the second game in a row.
The 'Cats rallied to tie Friday's game, and would chip away at the lead on Saturday as K.C. Judge, signed on Friday, hit an RBI single in his first at-bat as a RailCat in the fifth. Adam Klein's groundout in the sixth scored David Cooper to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Tim Alberts had the last of his three hits and two RBI in the sixth to increase the Sox lead to 9-4.
The RailCats made some noise in the ninth, as Rohde and Kyle Haines hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles to pull within 9-6. However, Amarillo closer Chase Johnson would come on and record the final out.
Coombs (2-2) allowed eight runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 in the loss. Sox starter Jack Spradlin (3-2) held the RailCats to three runs in five innings for the win while Johnson picked up his seventh save.
The series finale will be on Sunday at 6:05. Derek Drage (2-2, 3.60) will take the hill for Gary.
