Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

FARGO, N.D. - A hat trick by Evan Smith, along with 40 saves by Hunter Miska paced the Dubuque Fighting Saints to a 6-1 win over the Fargo Force on Friday night.

The win wrapped up the first game of a back-to-back with the Force, and in effect, extended a three-game winning streak for the Saints. It snapped a three-game winning streak for the Fargo Force.

Smith scored his first of the night, striking on the Saints' effective power play. The Force could not clear the puck after a tremendous keep by Nathan Sucese. He slipped a back-door dish to Smith, who redirected the puck home past Ryan Wischow.

Smith struck for his second time taking a feed from Gordie Green who started a quick two-on-one break off of a neutral zone turnover. He ripped a shot top shelf to make it 3-1 Saints.

His third of the game, which sealed the hat trick, came after he stashed home a rebound sitting in the crease off of a shot from his brother Mitchell. The goals were his third, fourth, and fifth goals of the season, putting him atop the goal leaderboard for the team.

Shane Kavanagh knocked home his first goal of the season, redirecting a shot from Charlie Combs, which, again, came off of a turnover. The Combs and Kavanagh combination came through when Combs deflected his second goal of the season into the net, making it 5-1 Saints.

Colin Theisen, back in the lineup after serving a four-game suspension, capped the scoring for the Saints. He has a point in every game he has played in thus far.

The Saints struck on six of their 29 shots on the night. Miska, on the other end, stopped 40 shots. 15 of them came in the final frame, and he stopped all of them.

Fargo dented the twine as Jack Adams deflected a point shot from Jake McLaughlin. A delayed penalty was on the way, and as Fargo worked the puck to the point, they worked a set play to get the puck in the net. But that was the only one that would make it through.

Miska robbed Brody Stevens midway through the third period, setting the tone for the Fighting Saints the rest of the way. He would stay letter perfect through two consecutive penalty kills. Fargo's potent power play went without a strike.

Dubuque will stay in Fargo to take on the Force at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Join all of the live action on the radio home of the Saints, Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on FASTHockey, the official video provider of the USHL.
