Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (5-2-0) successfully extended its winning streak to a franchise record five games, rallying in the second period to defeat the Chicago Steel (3-5-0) by a final score of 2-1 at the Alliant Energy Center on Friday night.

For a second straight game, the Capitols played a scoreless first while outshooting Chicago 9-8. Daniel Vladar and Garrett Metcalf, a pair of tall NHL prospects, were very solid in the opening period. Vladar came up with a pair of answers from point blank range on the frequently dangerous Charlie Gerard, while Metcalf made his finest stop on a Chicago 3-on-2, denying Jake Nielsen from the slot.

Madison's hot special teams also continued its excellence in the first, as the penalty kill fended off one Steel man advantage, the 17th successful kill in the Capitols' last 18 chances.

The Capitols began period two with 1:02 of power play time, but could not connect on the advantage, nor could they solve Vladar on another man advantage just moments later.

For the first time in 2015-16, Madison had to play from 1-0 behind as Marcel Godbout ripped home his fourth goal of the season at 8:27 to put the Steel on top on the power play.

The lead, though, would be temporary, as the Capitols used their quick-strike offense to teeter the game in their favor.

First, Haralds Egle threw a puck into the slot area from the right side on the rush. An onrushing Alec Broetzman made his way into a crowded path, reached behind his back and immediately snapped a shot through Vladar to tie the score at 12:03. It was the Hudson, Wis. native's first goal and point in the USHL.

As the goal provided a jolt to the home crowd and the entire Capitols bench, the home team wasted less than 2:30 to piggyback the momentum into a lead tally. After picking up the puck in the right circle, Tommy Muck looked to make a pass across the net mouth but instead found an opening in Vladar and wristed a rocket to the top shelf to make it 2-1. The goal came just 2:27 after Broetzman got Madison on the board.

At the other end, Metcalf had the door closed through the second, bringing his 40-minute save total to 17.

The third period saw Chicago get the better of the territorial play, but Metcalf played the role of the equalizer, with help from a Capitol penalty kill that finished the night at a 5-for-6 clip. In desperation time in the final minute, Grant Gabriele got one slap shot bid through a heavy screen in front, but Metcalf kicked it out with the leg pad to preserve the 2-1 triumph.

Madison established its franchise record five-game winning streak despite being outshot for a sixth time this season, 31-18.

After their meeting Friday, Chicago will visit Green Bay while Madison will host Bloomington. The Steel and Capitols will renew acquaintances on Sunday for a 4 p.m. matinee at the Alliant Energy Center. Saturday is the first Craft Beer Night inside the Coliseum, and dogs are welcome on Sunday afternoon for Pucks N' Paws presented by Animart.
