Chicago Steel News Release
MADISON, WISCONSIN - The Chicago Steel (3-5-0-0) started their first three-in-three weekend of the season with a 2-1 loss Friday against the Madison Capitols (5-2-0-0) at Alliant Energy Center. Despite the Steel outshooting the Capitols 31-18 in the game, stellar goaltending from Madison netminder Garrett Metcalf allowed the host team to hold on for a one-goal victory. The Capitols now have a franchise record five-game winning streak.
Steel forward Marcel Godbout opened up the scoring at 8:27 of the 2nd period, tallying a power play goal off a left circle wrist shot that beat Capitols goalie Garrett Metcalf high on the glove side. Madison would respond with two even strength tallies, as Alec Broetzman, from the slot, and Tommy Muck, from the right wing, each sent the puck past Chicago netminder Daniel Vladar in a span of 2:27, giving the Capitols a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.
Chicago heavily pressured in the third period, outshooting the Capitols 13-4. Following a Steel timeout, Vladar was finally able to make it to the bench in favor of an extra attacker with just 14 seconds remaining. The Steel managed one more scoring chance in the final seconds of the game, but Grant Gabriele's slap shot was stopped by the stick of Metcalf, securing the win for Madison.
Metcalf, drafted earlier this year by the Anaheim Ducks, was named Third Star of the Game with 30 saves. Vladar, a Boston Bruins prospect, made 16 saves for the Steel in the loss. Gabriele and Godbout each registered five shots on goal for Chicago.
Chicago continues their weekend road swing with a Saturday night game at Green Bay, followed by a return to Madison on Sunday afternoon.
The Steel return home on Friday, November 6 for Military Appreciation Night against the Lumberjacks, starting the month that features seven home games. For more details or to purchase tickets, call 855-51-STEEL, visit the box office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
