St. Paul Saints News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - For the second time in the series the St. Paul Saints were one out away from victory. For the second time the Columbus Clippers found a way to tie the game. For the third time in the series the game went into extras and the Saints lost 5-4 in eight innings in game two of the doubleheader. The loss ties a franchise record for consecutive losses at seven, and sets a franchise record with their eighth straight road loss.
Trevor Megill retired the first two hitters in the seventh with the Saints leading 4-3, but with two outs Tyler Freeman hit a solo homer to center, his first of the season, tying the game at four.
After the Saints failed to score in the eighth the Clippers walked it off for the third time in the series. With Alex Call the placed runner at second, catcher David Bañuelos tried to back pick Call, but threw the ball into center allowing Call to take third. Oscar Gonzalez' deep fly out to left scored Call for the game winner.
In the first the Clippers jumped out to a 3-0 as the first four batters reached. Will Benson led off the first with a single to center. Freeman singled Benson to third. Freeman swiped second and Call walked to load the bases. Gonzalez hit a high chopper over Kevin Merrell's head at third that scored two putting the Clippers up 2-0. Bobby Bradley then hit a grounder to second. Ernie Yake got the lead runner at second, but Jermaine Palacios' throw to first went into foul territory allowing Call to score increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Saints answered in the top of the second as Cole Sturgeon led off the inning with a single to left. Roy Morales' grounder to short was mishandled by Mitch Tollman putting runners at first and second. With runners at the corners and one out, Bañuelos singled home Sturgeon and sent Kevin Merrell to third. Ernie Yake's sacrifice fly to left got the Saints to within one at 3-2.
Curtis Terry gave the Saints the lead in the fifth. With one out Alex Kirilloff singled to right. Curtis then unloaded on one as he hit a two-run homer to left, his fourth of the season, putting the Saints up 4-3.
The Saints have Monday off and return to action on Tuesday to begin a six-game series at Werner Park at 6:35 p.m. Both teams are TBA. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
