St. Paul Saints News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Paul Saints can't look forward to going home anytime soon. They are in the middle of a 12-game roadtrip, a trip that has now seen them lose the first five games. Bailey Ober was solid in his Major League rehab, but the Saints couldn't quite overcome a four-run deficit and lost 5-3 to the Columbus Clippers on Sunday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader. The loss was the sixth straight and seventh consecutive away from home, a new franchise record.
Ober cruised through the first two innings, retiring all six hitters on a couple of strikeouts.
Jermaine Palacios gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the third with a towering homerun to straightaway center, his second of the season.
Ober made one mistake in the third off the bat of Will Benson. Mitch Tollman led off with a single to center. With two outs, Will Benson hit a two-run homer to right, his fifth of the season, putting the Clippers up 2-1.
An error in the fourth proved costly for the Saints. With one out Oscar Gonzalez singled to right. Ober then hit Bobby Bradley putting runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. Alex Call hit a grounder to third, but Caleb Hamilton's throw to first went into foul territory allowing two runs to score and sending Call to third. Mitch Tollman knocked home Call with a single to center putting the Clippers up 5-1.
Ober finished off his day by retiring the side in the fifth. Overall, he went 5.0 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out seven.
In the sixth the Saints mounted a comeback. Kyle Garlick led off with a fly ball double into left. With two outs Derek Fisher doubled off the wall in right scoring Garlick to make it 5-2. After a walk to Caleb Hamilton, José Godoy roped an RBI single off the glove of a leaping second baseman, Tyler Freeman, getting the Saints to within 5-3. After a pitching change, Elliot Soto walked to load the bases, but Palacios grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The other Major League rehabber, Kyle Garlick, went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
