St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints played in front of the largest crowd at CHS Field this season, 8,025. They had a chance to send them home in a frenzy, but couldn't score a run with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 10th as they lost to the Iowa Cubs 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday night.

The game went into extras because of an infield single that tied the game up in the top of the ninth. With the Saints up 5-4 in the ninth and a man on first with two outs, Abiatal Avelino singled off closer Derek Law that put runners at the corners. Tony Wolters then hit a 40-foot tapper to the first base side that Law went to field, but he couldn't pick up the ball and Vance Vizcaino scored tying the game at five.

In the 10th inning, Juan Minaya came on for the Saints as Ian Miller started the inning at second. Dee Strange-Gordon sacrificed him to third. Minaya got a big strikeout of Tyler Ladendorf for the second out of the inning. With Michael Hermosillo at the plate, Minaya uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Miller to score and give the I-Cubs a one run lead.

In the bottom of the 10th the Saints loaded the bases with nobody out. With Mark Contreras starting the inning at second, Dame Tomscha singled him to third. A walk to Daniel Descalso loaded the bases. The Saints would leave the bases loaded as David Bañuelos and Sherman Johnson struck out. Pinch hitter Drew Maggi hit a soft, looping liner to second to end the game.

The Saints were in control of the game through six innings as they built a 5-1 lead. Tomás Telis put the Saints on the board with a solo homer in the first, his sixth of the season, making it 1-0 Saints.

The I-Cubs tied it off Andrew Albers in the second on a solo shot by Trayce Thompson, his seventh of the season. It was the lone mistake by Albers who went 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.

In the fourth Damek Tomscha roped a double to left and two batters later scored on a double from Bañuelos giving the Saints a 2-1 lead. Two wild pitches later and Bañuelos scored making it 3-1.

In the fifth the Saints used the long ball to increase their lead to four. Solo homers from JT Riddle, his fifth of the season, and Tomscha, his fifth of the season, gave the Saints a 5-1 lead. Tomscha ended the night 4-5, finishing a triple shy of the cycle with an RBI and two runs scored.

In the seventh the I-Cubs got to within one courtesy of their own long ball. With one out Nick Martini singled to center and with two outs Avelino walked. Tony Wolters then crushed a three-run homer to right, his first of the season, to make it 5-4.

The same two teams meet in game five of the six-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Charlie Barnes (2-1, 3.53) to the mound while the I-Cubs are TBA. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
