Bisons Win Third Consecutive Game, Beating Red Wings 8-6

Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons have displayed their power throughout the series at Frontier Field, but Saturday night's game was a bit different. The Herd took down the Red Wings, 8-6, but did so with just one extra-base hit.

Rather than doing their damage with power, the club was selective at the plate, walking nine times throughout the game, and stringing their hits together to make them count.

After trailing for three innings, Nash Knight reached first base on an error to start the top of the 5th. With one out, both Breyvic Valera and Christian Colon worked themselves walks on consecutive at-bats, loading the bases. Kevin Smith then hit a ground ball to score Knight, but Colon was thrown out at second base on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Cullen Large stepped into the batter's box next and singled to score Valera from third, tying the game at three.

The two teams were held scoreless in the 6th, but the Bisons took the lead in the top of the 7th. With one out, Valera worked himself a walk to earn first base. Colon then singled, and Smith walked, loading the bases with one out yet again. Large stepped to the plate looking for a big hit but instead was hit by a pitch, scoring Valera from third to take the lead. The club wasn't done yet though in the top of the 7th. Richard Urena got the big hit Large was looking for, hitting a single to left-center field to score two runs, and with a throwing error, Large was able to score too. The four-run inning gave the Bisons a 7-3 lead over their thruway rival.

The Red Wings quickly responded to the Herd's big inning though. With Alec Keller on first base, Yadiel Hernandez homered to right field, cutting away the Bison's lead. The club was able to escape the inning, holding a 7-5 lead with just two at-bats left for both teams.

The Herd added one last insurance run to their lead in the top of the 9th. With one out, Colon walked for his third time in the game. Smith soon joined him on base, hitting an infield single to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Urena delivered yet again, hitting a double to center field, scoring Colon.

Kirby Snead took the mound for the Herd in the bottom of the 9th, earning his second save for the club this year, but not without some stress. The Red Wings were able to put runners on second and third with just one out. Daniel Palka flew out to right field, scoring Alec Keller from third to cut the Bisons lead to two runs. Snead then got the next batter to ground out, ending the Red Wing's hopes of a rally.

The middle of the Bisons' batting order was effective at the plate in Saturday evening's game, but perhaps no one shined more than Urena. The veteran was 3-for-5 at the plate, knocking in three of the club's eight runs. Colon was quietly effective too, going 1-for-2 at the plate and earning three walks. Colon also rounded home twice to score for the Herd.

The Bisons (21-18) will look to keep their momentum going against the Red Wings (15-26) Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm. Jacob Waguespack is expected to start on the mound for the Herd.
