PAPILLION, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers could not overcome a 12-run, 18-hit output by the Louisville Bats, losing, 12-2, on Saturday at Werner Park.
Louisville (14-26) scored two runs in the first inning against Omaha (28-12) left-hander Marcelo Martinez (Loss, 0-1) on a home run by Mark Payton. The Bats added a run in the second on an RBI single from Alejo Lopez before breaking the game open in the third.
The Bats sent nine men to the plate in the third inning, scoring five runs on six consecutive hits, including a three-run homer by Beau Taylor. After Martinez allowed a walk and four hits, right-hander Eddie Butler entered and allowed two hits before retiring the side. Martinez allowed a career-high eight runs on nine hits in his Triple-A debut in 2.0 innings, striking out two and walking two.
Omaha scored its only runs in the fourth inning. Third baseman Emmanuel Rivera led off the inning with a solo home run to right field against right-hander Riley O'Brien (Win, 2-2), his fourth homer of the series and his 12th of the season. Next, after designated hitter Ryan McBroom walked, catcher Meibrys Viloria and right fielder Bubba Starling hit back-to-back singles to bring in the Chasers final run of the game.
Louisville added four runs in the eighth inning against right-hander Andrés Sotillet, sending nine men to the plate for the second time in the game. Following a one-out error by shortstop Angelo Castellano-one of a season-high three errors for Omaha in the game-Alfredo Rodriguez and Taylor stroked back-to-back hits to bring in the first runs of the inning. Taylor later scored on a two-run single by Lopez.
Right-hander Jake Newberry threw a scoreless eighth inning and the Chasers turned to catcher Nate Esposito in the ninth, where he threw nine pitches in a scoreless frame.
The Storm Chasers complete their six-game series with Louisville on Sunday, when left-hander Daniel Lynch (3-1, 4.88) faces right-hander Bo Takahashi (1-3, 6.23). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and coverage begins with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. on 1180 The Zone.
