Rapid City Rush News Release

(Loveland, CO) - On Friday night, the Rapid City Rush and Colorado Eagles squared off in the first of twelve meetings between the two rivals. Colorado was lead by Scott May who posted a hat trick in the 5-2 victory at the Budweiser Events Center. Both teams now head to Rapid City for the Rush home opener tomorrow at 7:05pm.

Prior to the opening faceoff, Rush netminder Danny Battochio had equipment issues and missed the opening 22 minutes of the game. That allowed rookie Jimmy Spratt to make his first appearance in a Rush uniform.

May picked up his first of the contest at the 2:44 mark on a wrist shot from the high slot that found the top-left corner. The Rush answered back at 2:44 when defenseman Scott Kalinchuk's wrist shot was deflected home by Scott Wray, evening the score at 1-1. Shortly thereafter, the Eagles were awarded a two-man advantage and capitalized when Riley Nelson fired a one-timer home at the 6:17 mark. Then, near the midway point of the opening frame, the Eagles would extend their lead on a rebound goal scored by Steve Haddon, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The second period remained quiet until the 15:59 mark when defenseman Scott Kalinchuk picked up a powerplay goal. Kalinchuk collected the puck in neutral ice and avoided a pair of checks before ripping a wrist shot over the glove of Kyle Jones, cutting the lead in half. The Rush had momentum and were within striking distance, but a late goal would deflate the visitors. With just 32 seconds left in the period, Scott may struck again, this time on a 2-on-1 chance that ended with a laser to the short side, regaining the two-goal advantage.

The contest slowed down in the final period, yielding just a combined 17 shots. With 27 seconds left, May completed the hat trick, scoring an empty net goal to secure the 5-2 win.
