Gems Pick Up Weekend Sweep With 5-3 Win
October 23, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Dayton, OH- Looking to build off of a gutty 3-2 win over Quad City on Friday night; the Gems took to the ice for home game number four this season as they faced the Odessa Jackalopes for the first time in Franchise history. Dayton would enter the night tied for second place in the Turner Conference standings and with a win could vault themselves into either the top spot or end up being alone and not tied for second by the end of the night.
For the second time this season, the Gems got out of the gate early and took a 1-0 lead on their first power play opportunity of the night when Jonathan Ornelas slammed home a perfect pair of passes by line mates Chris Lipsett and Brett Lutes. That would be the only scoring for either team in the period and the Gems took the one-goal lead into the second.
The Gems would not only increase their lead early in the second, they would push it up to a three goal lead when Erik Boisvert and Brett Lutes would score tallies less than two minutes apart. Odessa would finally get on the board with their first goal on the power play ten minutes later to cut the lead to two at 3-1. With exactly one minute left in the second, Lutes ripped home a wrist shot to push the lead back to three again and give Dayton a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
By the end of the second period, it was clear that Dayton had been controlling the ice with their puck possession through those first 40 minutes and were well on their way to a big victory, but Odessa had something else in mind to start the third period. The lead was cut to 4-2 when the Jackalopes got one just behind the pads of Gems starter Jeff Jakaitis. Then moments later, Odessa gave the Gems fans a little bit of a scare when they got it down to a one-goal game after converting their second power play of the night. The game remained at 4-3 for almost the next 11 minutes, then with just under two minutes to play in regulation and Jackalopes starter Joel Martin pulled for the extra attacker, leading scorer Chris Lipsett iced the game with an empty netter to propel Dayton to the 5-3 victory.
All-in-all it was a complete team effort to earn the victory, six different Gems recorded a point and Jakaitis did what he had to do, especially in the final period when he stopped 13 of 15 shots faced. The power play was a machine having converted three out of four chances and the Gems blocked a number of shots throughout the night and set the tone from the drop of the puck with the level of physicality they brought to the ice.
