Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Making his return to Tim's Toyota Center in an Arizona Sundogs uniform, Mark Kolanos netted a pair of power-play goals, including the overtime winner, to help his club to a 2-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets Friday night.
Set up along the half boards, Kolanos one-timed a Tyler Butler cross-ice feed past Kevin Reiter 1:44 into the extra session for his second of the night and third of the young season. Joey Sides also assisted on the play for his third point on the year.
Doug Groenestege turned aside 28 of 29 shots in his first start of the season. The goaltender was held out of the Sundogs' lineup in the team's first two games of the season due to immigration issues.
Guy Dupuis gave the visiting Komets a 1-0 lead late in the first period, redirecting a Mathieu Curadeau shot from inside the blue line over the left arm of Groenestege with two minutes to play in the opening frame.
Kolanos knotted the game at one 38 seconds into the second period with his team skating 5-on-3 after consecutive Fort Wayne penalties to close out the first period. Stationed at the top of the near circle, Kolanos settled a Jason Visser set up feed from behind the Komets' cage and lifted a wrist shot past Reiter.
Both clubs struggled on the power play Friday night. Arizona finished 2-for-12 with the man advantage and Fort Wayne converted once on seven tries. The Sundogs were penalized 42 minutes on 14 infractions while the Komets picked up 17 penalties totaling 41 minutes.
Arizona improves to 2-1-0 on the year, its best start since its 2008 Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Championship, while Fort Wayne falls to 0-1-1 in its first two contests since joining the Central Hockey League.
The two teams face off again tomorrow night at 7:05pm at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Tickets start at just $12 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.GetTix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
