Mississippi Shows Up Missouri For First Win
October 23, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings won its first game of the season on Saturday, October 23rd, handing the Missouri Mavericks its first regulation time loss of the year in a 5-4 decision at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. RiverKings forwards Darrell Stoddard and R.G. Flath provided the winning margin with goals scored 20 seconds apart in the final period of play.
The red-lighters capped a comeback from a 3-0 first intermission deficit taken by Missouri. Ray DiLauro, Nick Sirota, and Toby LaFrance's power play goal with just over three minutes remaining in the frame gave the Mavericks the cushion.
But Mississippi would score five of the next six goals scored in what would become a nip-and-tuck battle before 2,972 in the DCC. Three tallies would come off the power play, scored by Chris Richards in the second period, and Nathan Lutz and Stoddard combined for extra-man goals in the final period.
Jeff Christian started the rally with his first goal of the year nearly four minutes into the middle session and Flath's goal from Matt Boyd and Anthony Battaglia with three and a half minutes to play provided the game winner.
Missouri got a second goal from DiLauro in the third period that gave the Mavericks a 4-3 advantage, but that would be all the further offense they could muster.
The RiverKings out shot Missouri 28-23 for the game, with Mississippi goaltender Larry Sterling (1-2-0) winning his game in the crease with a 19-save performance. Zane Kalemba (0-1-0) suffered the loss in his first Missouri start, making 23 saves.
Mississippi got its special teams in high gear for the first time this season, scoring three times on the power play in nine tries. Missouri netted one power play goal in six opportunities.
With the victory, the RiverKings move to 1-3-0 for the season and Missouri drops to 2-1-1. The teams meet each other again, this time in Missouri, next Friday night, October 29th. The RiverKings return home on Saturday, October 30th, to play the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in a 7:05 PM contest at the DeSoto Civic Center.
