Akron RubberDucks News Release

Bowie catcher David Freitas drilled an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon, driving in the eventual game-winning run and lifting the Baysox to a 2-1 victory and a three-game sweep over the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park.

Turning Point

With the score tied, 1-1, in the ninth, Bowie's Tucker Nathans reached base on a one-out single off Akron reliever Casey Weathers (0-2). Freitas, a 26-year-old catcher from Wilton, Ca., then stepped to the plate and jumped on a 1-0 pitch from Weathers and ripped a double to center to drive in Nathans. It was the third hit and second double of the day for Freitas.

Mound Presence

Akron starter Ryan Merritt was outstanding in his seven innings of work, yielding only a first-inning run on a pair of doubles by Mike Yastrzemski and Trey Mancini. He scattered five hits, walked none and matched his season-high with eight strikeouts. Despite throwing so well, he departed the game trailing 1-0. Bowie's Terry Doyle, the Eastern League's leader in wins with 12, also worked seven innings and did not allow a run until surrendering a solo homer to Ronny Rodriguez in the seventh to tie the game 1-1.

Duck Tales

Rodriguez was 2-4 on the day. His homer in the seventh was his sixth of the year. Todd Hankins was 2-3, with a pair of singles.
