
Royals Rally, but Nailers Maintain First Place

WHEELING, WV - Joey Haddad scored twice, but the Reading Royals rallied for three third period goals to defeat the Wheeling Nailers in the overtime shootout 4-3 at WesBanco Arena Saturday night. The Nailers does earn another point in the standings, and holds a one point lead for first place in the North Division.
Reading at several opportunities to race out to an early first period lead, but goaltender Patrick Killeen made some dazzling saves to keep the game scoreless. Wheeling cracked the scoresheet first as Joey Haddad took the puck behind the net, brought it to the circle, and fired a wrist shot past Royals goaltender Zane Kalemba.
The Nailers exploded for two more goals in the second as Nick Petersen backhanded his team lead 15th goal of the season past Kalemba, giving Wheeling the 2-0 lead. Haddad stuck again at 9:59 of the period beating Kalemba on the glove side to extend the Nailers lead to 3-0 at the end of two periods.
Reading rallied in the third as they received goals from Yannick Riendeau and Chris Blight scored in the first 12 minutes of the period. The Royals pulled their goaltender, and with the extra attacker, Ben Gordon tipped in a shot from the point past Killeen to tie the game a three with 23 seconds remaining in regulation forcing overtime. Neither team could seal the game in the overtime session, which sent the game to the shootout. All four of Reading's shooters scored in the shootout to secure the 4-3 come from behind victory. The Nailers outshot the Royals 39-30.
Wheeling returns to action on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. against division rival the Toledo Walleye. There will be a postgame skate with the Nailers players, and SponegBob Square Pants will be on hand. To purchase tickets call 304-234-GOAL.
