Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Las Vegas, Nev- The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Alaska Aces in overtime at Sullivan Arena Friday night snapping the Aces nine game win streak and obtaining their first overtime win of the season. Jamie Bates ended the contest twenty-seven seconds in to the extra frame helping the Wranglers to their first win over the Aces in three attempts. Joe Fallon turned away 29 of 31 shots and improved his record to 7-5-1 while Adam Courchaine stopped 16 of 19 and falls to 5-2-1 on the season. Alaska outshot Las Vegas 31-19 as the Wranglers took no more than seven shots in a period. Ryan Huddy scored his sixteenth goal of the season in the win for Las Vegas and defenseman Craig Switzer had two assists. For the third time in the last four games Jamie Bates was credited with the first star of the night honor to go along with his game winning goal and two assists. With the win the Wranglers improve to 18-8-3 overall, 9-4-2 on the road, and control the first place spot in the Pacific division with 39 total points. The Aces fall to 20-9-2 overall, 12-4-2 at home, but still continue on a ten-game point streak.
Las Vegas and Alaska traded goals back and forth the entire game until the final tally came in overtime. Ryan Huddy scored at 3:39 of the first period assisted by Craig Switzer and Jamie Bates to give the Wranglers and early lead. Alaska knotted the game at 16:00 of the first period with Scott Howes' power play goal assists going to Daryl Boyle and Brian Swanson. After one period Alaska was leading in the shots category 14-6 but the game was tied at one.
The Wranglers scored the lone goal of the second period at 19:29 when Geoff Paukovich smashed in a rebound attempt with the assists going to Jamie Bates and Craig Switzer. After two periods the Wranglers were on top 2-1 but found themselves trailing 13-21 in shot attempts.
Las Vegas looked liked they were primed to take the win in regulation, but Alaska still had one more goal to give. With 1:20 left on the game clock, and an empty Alaska net, the Aces' Chris Langkow beat Joe Fallon and tied the game at three assisted by Scott Howes and Daryl Boyle. At the end of regulation the Wranglers had been outshot 18-31 and went 0-4 on their power play opportunities, but the game was tied and heading into overtime.
After giving up the game tying goal late in the third period and taking the plus/minus rating hit for it, forward Jamie Bates decided to make tomorrow's battle a rubber match. At: 27 of overtime Bates lit the lamp and secured the Wranglers' first overtime victory of the season with the helper coming from Eddie DelGrosso.
These two teams battle again tomorrow night at Sullivan Arena before Las Vegas heads to Victoria for a two-game set starting on the 11th. The Wranglers do not return home to the Orleans Arena until January 14th when they host the Ontario Reign.
