Alaska's Winning Streak Snapped in 3-2 OT Loss

January 8, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Jamie Bates scored 27 seconds into overtime to hand the Aces their first defeat in a month as the Alaska Aces fell 3-2 to the Las Vegas Wranglers at Sullivan Arena on Friday night. The Aces forced overtime with a late goal in regulation to extend their point streak to ten games, but their ECHL-best winning streak was snapped at nine. The Aces dropped to 20-9-2 on the year, and 9-1-1 on their current home stand. Alaska retained the top winning percentage in the conference following the overtime loss. The Aces and Wranglers will return for one final game on the home stand on Saturday night before the Aces hit the road again. The Wranglers struck first with a Ryan Huddy goal 3:39 into the game on a rebound from the slot. The Aces answered later in the frame on a power play when Scott Howes continued his hot streak. Howes converted on a third whack at a loose puck in the slot at 16:00 to even the score. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 14-6 in the period.

The second period was played mostly scoreless, with each team putting up seven shots, but with just over half a minute play in the frame, Geoff Paukovich scored on a rebound from the left circle to make it 2-1 Las Vegas at second intermission.

The Aces finally broke through after getting chances in the third period, when they pulled their goaltender late for an extra attacker. At 18:40, Howes set up Chris Langkow in the slot from behind the net, and Langkow scored to tie the game and force overtime. But just 27 seconds into the extra frame Bates took a back-door feed and scored the game winning goal to hand the Aces their first loss since December 8th.

Adam Courchaine (5-2-1) made 16 saves on 19 shots and took the overtime loss. Joe Fallon (7-5-1) earned the win, making 29 saves on 31 shots. The Aces power play went 1-2, while the Wranglers went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Wranglers 31-19 in the game.

The Aces and Wranglers will return home to conclude their home stand on Saturday night at 7:15pm. Fans can visit the Aces at their Facebook page for more information, or call the Aces at 907.258.ACES.
