Stingrays Fight Back to Defeat Devils

North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (20-14-1-1) erased a two-goal deficit to defeat the Trenton Devils (13-15-0-3) 3-2 in the shootout in front of 3,660 at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night. The win extended the Stingrays' unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-0-1).

Devils rookie Ryan Hayes netted the only goal of the first period on the power play tipping a shot from forward Jeff Prough over the right pad of Stingrays goaltender Jared DeMichiel at 15:48. Forward Jeremy Akeson earned the second assist on Hayes' 13 goal of the season.

The Devils made it 2-0 at 6:31 of the second period when forward Dan Charleston banked a shot off the back of DeMichiel from the left-wing corner. Forwards Tony Zancanaro and Prough received assists. Seconds later, Stingrays forward Rob Ricci cut the lead in half with his 16 goal of the season slipping a shot under the right pad of Devils netminder Shane Connelly from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Patrick Cullity picked up the lone assist. Rays forward Jake Hauswirth tied the contest on the power play at 17:21 from forward David de Kastrozza and defenseman Bryan Schmidt.

The 2-2 tie remained at the end of regulation. Trenton had a great chance to win the game on the power play 3:22 into overtime, but the Stingrays penalty kill stood strong including two blocked shots in the final seconds from forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Stingrays forward Samson Mahbod tallied the only goal in the shootout to seal the victory.

DeMichiel pushed his personal winning streak to six games stopping 30 of 32 Devils shots. Connelly suffered the loss kicking away 28 of 30 Stingrays chances. Both teams ended the night 1-for-3 on the power play.
