Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
JULY 3, 2006, 6:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (32-51) vs. Iowa Cubs (39-43)
HOME: 18-20 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 14-31 (37-35 in '05) vs. Iowa: 4-4 (8-8 in '05)
TONIGHT: The Royals meet the Iowa Cubs at 6:05 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium, in the final game of a 4-game series. The Qwest Family Festival from 3-6 p.m. features games and inflatables by Bryan Hill Entertainment and a performance by Night Wing, part of the Heartland of America Band from Offutt Air Force Base. Following the game, it's Fireworks by Grucci, presented by the Omaha World-Herald, the City of Omaha and the Omaha Royals. Air-time for the game broadcast is 5:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com. The music accompanying the fireworks display will be aired on Star 104.5.
LAST NIGHT: Denny Bautista pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, while Chad Allen and Mike Aviles each drove in 2 runs, as the Royals defeated Iowa 5-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Bautista (1-2) allowed just 3 singles and worked around 5 walks, striking out 1 batter. Allen led off the 2nd inning with a double and scored the 1st run of the game on the 1st of 3 singles by Aviles. Allen capped the scoring in the 8th with a 2-run homer, his 10th of the season. It scored Shane Costa, who had opened the inning with his 3rd single of the night. Buck Coats spoiled Omaha's shutout bid in the 9th with a 2-out, RBI single off Eddie Yarnall, but Shane Loux struck out pinch-hitter Michael Restovich to notch his 1st career save.
ROYALS REPORT: Bautista has allowed just 1 earned run over 11.0 innings in his last 2 starts, rebounding from a June 22 start at Iowa when he gave up 7 earned runs in 3.0 innings. *** Costa is hitting .457 (21-46) over the last 11 games, belting 3 homers, driving in 9 runs and scoring 12 runs himself. *** Allen has homered in back-to-back games off 2 very tough Iowa relievers, going deep off Michael Wuertz with 2 away in the 9th inning Saturday to tie that contest, and homering off PCL All-Star Kerry Ligtenberg last night. *** Even with an 0-for-4 night Sunday, Ruben Gotay has batted .345 (10-29) over his last 8 contests, knocking in 12 runs over that span (he had 24 RBI in his 1st 69 games). *** Mike Coolbaugh made his Omaha debut last night. He drew a bases loaded walk in the 4th inning to put the Royals ahead 2-0, but was hitless in 3 at-bats, striking out twice. *** Aviles went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI last night, after going 0-for-10 in the 1st 2 games of the series. *** Kerry Robinson was hitless in 4 at-bats last night, but is still hitting ..391 (9-23) in 5 games since coming down from KC. *** Fernando Cortez was 0-for-4 Sunday night. It was the 1st time in 9 games with Omaha that he did not have at least 1 hit and it dropped his average from .294 to .263. Cortez was on the front end last night of all 4 double plays turned by the Royals, which tied a season high for the club. *** Justin Huber missed a second consecutive game Sunday. He's day-to-day with a sore thumb.
STARTERS: LH Les Walrond (7-2, 3.55) vs. RH Ryan Baerlocher (3-3, 3.78)
Baerlocher makes his 5th start (16th appearance) of the season. The 28-year old right-hander's last appearance came as a starter last Wednesday at Albuquerque; he was not involved in the decision as the Royals lost 6-5 (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K). Baerlocher made 2 relief appearances at Iowa in late June, picking up the win in Omaha's 6-4 victory on June 23 and tossing 5.0 scoreless innings over the 2 outings. In his 4 starts this season, Baerlocher is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA. He's 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 1 save in 11 relief appearances. Baerlocher began this season at extended spring, joining Omaha on April 27. In 2005, Baerlocher opened the season on the disabled list after undergoing Tommy John surgery on July 16, 2004. Once off the D.L. last season, he made 3 starts for Omaha, going 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA. He was sent to Wichita and went on to become the Double-A club's Pitcher of the Year, after posting a 7-5 record with a 3.44 ERA in 15 starts. In 89.0 innings for Wichita, he walked just 27 batters while striking out 63. Baerlocher was selected by KC in the 6th round of the 1999 draft out of Lewis-Clark State College, where he was a member of NAIA National Championship teams in 1996 and 1999.
