Tacoma pair sweeps weekly honors in PCL
July 3, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Tacoma Rainiers continued their winning ways this week, and did so behind outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and hurler Cesar Jimenez, named the PCL's Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for June 26th-July 3rd. Jimenez's one-hit shutout performance was all that was needed to take home Pitcher of the Week honors as he defeated the Las Vegas 51s on June 28th. Choo collected 18 hits in 31 at-bats for a .581 batting average on the week while posting a 1.032 slugging percentage en route to picking up the League's Player of the Week award.
Choo's put together two four-for-five and two three-for-four appearances that headlined his stellar week that included three home runs, three doubles, and a triple with 11 RBI and ten runs scored. The Pusan, South Korea native's award-winning week has been just a small part of an impressive stretch in which he has hit safely in 22 of his last 25 games, including 15 multiple-hit performances. The twenty three year-old is now hitting .327 on the season with 11 homers and 39 RBI.
Rainier starter, Cesar Jimenez faced just 29 batters in his one-hit complete game shutout of Las Vegas. With his lone performance of the week, Jimenez improved to 4-and-5 on the season with a 3.95 ERA. At 21 years of age, Cesar is in his fifth professional season and his first at the Triple-A level.
This marks the second time in two seasons that two Rainiers players have swept the PCL weekly awards. Masoa Kida and Abraham Nunez achieved the same feat almost exactly one year ago, for the week of June 13-19 in 2005.
