LAST NIGHT: Danny Tamayo (2-1) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, helping the Royals to a 3-1 victory and a 2-games-to-1 lead in the series. Right-hander Adam Bernero, in his 1st start of the season, was relieved by Tamayo with 2 runners on base and 2 outs in the 5th and Omaha leading 2-0. Brian Daubach ripped Tamayo's 1st pitch for an RBI double to right. Tamayo allowed just 1 hit the rest of the way, walking 1 and striking out 3. Former Royal Dennis Tankersley (0-3) took the loss, despite allowing only 2 runs in 6.0 innings.
ROYALS REPORT: Royals center fielder Kerry Robinson left the game following the 4th inning with chest pains. Chip Ambres was moved from left field to right field in the 5th, with Aaron Guiel taking over in center. With high winds wreaking havoc for outfielders all night, Ambres made two great grabs in the top of the 5th to help the Royals preserve the lead. He hauled in leadoff batter Travis Hanson's drive to warning track in right-center. Then, with 2 runners in scoring position following Daubach's RBI double, Ambres snagged Michel Hernandez' liner down the right field line to end the inning. *** Justin Huber also came out of the contest following the 4th, after he dislocated his right pinky finger as he dove back towards 1st base while being picked off by Tankersley. Following last night's game, trainer Jeff Stevenson said a doctor examined Robinson at the ballpark and diagnosed a spasm in his rib cage as the cause of his chest pain. Stevenson thought Robinson could be available to play Tuesday. He said Huber may be available to play in 2 to 3 days. Before Robinson left, his 1st inning single ran his hitting streak to 7 games (.448, 13-29). *** Paul Phillips went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored last night. He has hit in 7 of his last 8 contests (.444, 12-27, 7 R). *** Mike Aviles also has a hit in 7 of his past 8 games, going 11-for-32 (.344) with 2 homers and 7 RBI. *** Ricky Bell, who entered the game in the leadoff spot in the 5th inning last night, went 0-for-3, halting his 6-game hit string. *** Andres Blanco has hit in 4 straight tilts (.467, 7-15) and in 10 of the past 12 games. Over that longer span, the Royals shortstop is hitting .400 (18-45) with 12 RBI. He leads the club with a .354 average. *** The Royals turned 3 double plays last night, matching a season high set on April 16th in a 7-6 victory at Memphis.
