Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals topped the league leading Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-1 in a fast-paced contest in front of 6,245 fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Friday night.
Entering tonight's contest, the Hurricanes were riding a 10-game winning streak and led the WHL with 72 points (36-12-0-0). The Royals, who sit second in the Western Conference with 65 points (30-15-2-3), continued their success with their fourth straight victory and have now collected points in seven consecutive games (6-0-1-0).
Lethbridge received stellar goaltending from Stuart Skinner, who made 39 saves on the night and was named the game's first star. Victoria's Alex Forsberg broke a 1-1 tie midway through the third period on the powerplay, before Jack Walker scored his second marker of the game on an empty-net to secure the two points for the Royals. The Hurricanes' lone goal was registered by Ryley Lindgren on the man-advantage.
Coming into the game Lethbridge was the highest scoring team in the WHL. Victoria's defense held the Hurricanes to 17 shots in the contest, which sets a new season-low for the visitors.
Royals' netminder Coleman Vollrath turned aside 16 of the 17 shots he faced.
Victoria posted a 1/520.0% mark on the powerplay, while Lethbridge went 1/425.0% on the man-advantage.
The Royals are back in action tomorrow night as they head out on the road to take on the Western Conference leading Kelowna Rockets. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m and will be televised on Sportsnet.
