Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
The Edmonton Oil Kings continued their winning ways against the Brandon Wheat Kings this year after a 4-3 victory Friday night at Rexall Place.
Andrew Koep lead the way with a pair of goals and Dysin Mayo, Brandon Baddock and Lane Bauer all contributed with two points in the win. Goaltender Patrick Dea got the start and delivered stopping 28 of 31 shots, including a few heroic saves in the final minute for his 12th win of the season.
"Bottom line that was an important two points for us," said Head Coach Steve Hamilton. "I thought our guys really battled to get it. It's been a heck of a week with the competition we've had to go through here. I feel like two out of the three wins against three of the divisional leaders is pretty good."
The Wheat Kings got on the board first when Tyler Coulter buried a rebound past Dea 1:26 into the game. But Koep and Bauer answered back taking the Oil Kings into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Edmonton got goals at the very beginning and end of the second period. Koep scored his second of the game (10th of the season) just 23 seconds into the middle frame and Mayo blasted home a laser-like slapshot from the point on the powerplay with only 2.6 ticks on the clock.
The Wheat Kings got the only goal in the third when Ivan Provorov scored on a Macoy Erkamps powerplay shot bringing them to within one. They pulled goaltender Jordan Papirny with a minute left and pressed Edmonton with the extra attacker, but that was as close as they got as Dea and the team shut the door on route to their third consecutive victory over Brandon this season.
"In the third period I thought they unloaded the full arsenal on us," said Hamilton. "We were a little bit in survival mode sometimes. That's going to happen against good teams, but we held our ground with a couple of unbelievable stops there in the end and you need that against a good team."
Edmonton will look to stretch its home winning streak to four when they entertain the Kootenay Ice on Sunday January 31, which is "Pink at the Rink" with a special start time of 4pm.
