Tigers Win Defensive Battle

Medicine Hat, AB -- On a night where ATB Financial and the Medicine Hat Tigers hosted NHL legend Bryan Trottier, the Tigers were able to pull together a 3 goal third period to take down the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday night.

With not much room to move out on the ice, the Tigers and Warriors were locked in a defensive battle for majority of the frame. Brayden Point was making his season debut against the Tabbies after being absent from the past two matchups because of the World Juniors in Finland over Christmas. The line of Point, former Tiger Dryden Hunt and Russian forward Nikita Popugaev were the line to watch and they would open the scoring just past the midway point of the period as Popugaev was recipient of a nice cross crease pass by Hunt, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The middle period wasn't much to write home about. Medicine Hat still hadn't taken a penalty in the game and not one would be called in the frame either. Nick Schneider stood tall between the pipes for the Tigers as did surprise starter Brody Wilms, who was in for Zach Sawchenko who just arrived from Vancouver at the BMO Top Prospects game. The pace was fast and furious but saw no scoring as the Warriors held a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Medicine Hat woke up their offense in the third period as it seemed the line of Brian Williams, Steven Owre and Mark Rassell turned it up a notch. The trio of forwards, including two Californians, created chances as a second line unit, something the Tabbies have been missing when injuries confronted them. Hard working Alex Mowbray would also continue to create chances on Wilms, just sending multiple pucks wide of the cage. It was Matt Bradley however who would open the scoring for the Tigers, wristing home his 16th of the season just before the midway point of the final frame.

Finally, the Tigers would catch a break as David Quenneville blasted a slap shot, which hit a stick of a Warrior defender at the high slot, sending the black disk high into the air and it ended up behind Wilms to give the Tigers the lead with just over one minute left.

Bradley would score into an empty net to seal the game, a comeback victory, 3-1.
