Medicine Hat, AB - As we get closer to the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo, New York on June 26th and 27th, the Tigers are highlighting some draft eligible players that are hoping to hear their name called on draft day.
Selected in the sixth round (127th overall) of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, Riley Steen came to the Tigers ready to make an impression.
The 6-foot-2 defender first dipped his toe into the Western Hockey League waters in the 2024-25 season where he played 17 games, finishing with a +1 rating. The 2008-born defender solidified his spot in the lineup in 2025-26 where he scored two goals and 10 assists for 12 points and a +22 rating in 57 games.
As a shutdown defender, Steen's effectiveness was most prevalent in his own end as he closed passing lanes and forced turnovers with his elite defensive awareness. Steen was no stranger to using his size to force the opposition out of the crease or keeping them to the outside, constantly finishing his checks to establish a dominating presence. Steen's incredible play landed him ranked 146th overall among North American Skaters in the NHL Central Scouting's Final Draft Rankings.
