Rox Throw Ninth Shutout of Season, Win Before All-Star Break
July 18, 2021 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
Waterloo, IA - Brilliant pitching and timely hitting allowed St. Cloud (34-12) to pull off a 2-0 victory over Waterloo (28-19) on Sunday.
This is the Rox' league-leading ninth shutout of the season. Andrew Morones (San Joaquin Delta) narrowly escaped in the ninth with the shutout and the victory after Waterloo after the Bucks loaded the bases. Brice Matthews (Nebraska) turned an unassisted double play on a line drive to end the game.
Storm Hierholzer (TCU) got his second start of the season and shined on the mound. Hierholzer threw five shutout frames and didn't allow a hit. The only blemishes on his line were three hit-by-pitches and two walks.
The bats got rolling in the fifth inning as Cody Kelly (Minnesota) brought in a run with an RBI single to left. Nick Yovetich (San Francisco) came across to score after hitting his third double of the series.
Otto Kemp (Point Loma Nazarene) was also able to bring in a run in the sixth, with a sacrifice fly. That was Kemp's 27th RBI of the season, which leads the team.
St. Cloud maintained its standing atop the Northwoods League with the win and kept pace with Mankato who is still two-and-a-half games back of the Rox. For the full Northwoods League standings, click here.
The Northwoods League all-star break begins on Monday and St. Cloud will send five players and its coaching staff to Mankato for the All-Star Game. The Rox return home to the Rock Pile after the break to start a four-game homestand on Thursday, July 22.
