(Altoona, PA) - The Altoona Curve (48-68) used a 6-run fourth inning to trounce the Portland Sea Dogs in the series opener, 10-3 on Tuesday night in the series opener at Blair County Ballpark. Portland had their 5-game winning streak snapped but remains in the lead for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.
Altoona RHP Mike Crotta (6-6) beat the Sea Dogs for the second time in a week, working 5.2 innings on six hits, and two unearned runs. Portland's previous loss before the winning streak came at the hands of Crotta at Hadlock Field. RHP Ryne Lawson (3-10) lasted only 3+ innings on 10 hits and 8 runs to take the loss for Portland.
The Curve received multi-hit performances from their top 3 hitters: CF Gorkys Hernandez (3-for-6, RBI, 3 RS), 2B Shelby Ford (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and 3B Pedro Alvarez (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2B, BB). C Steve Lerud went 3-for-5, 2B and former Sea Dog LF Jeff Corsaletti reached base four times with a single and 3 walks. Portland C Luis Exposito had 3 of Portland's 8 hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the eighth inning. DH Juan Apodaca and SS Yamaico Navarro drove each had RBI's during Portland's 2-run sixth inning that cut the deficit to 10-2.
Lawson was knocked in the fourth inning after six consecutive batters reached base on five singles and a walk. RHP Chad Rhoades relieved Lawson but did not failed to retire the first two batters, allowing 3 inherited runners to score on a fielder's choice, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. 1B Miles Durham went 0-for-2 but drove in three runs for the Curve with 2 sac-flies and a fielder's choice. Crotta fanned four in his 22nd start of the season and threw 96 pitches/62 strikes.
RHP Richie Lentz, LHP Andrew Dobies and RHP Bryce Cox each tossed scoreless innings of relief, allowing only 3 hits in the final 3 innings. RHP Derek Hankins worked 3.1 IP on two hits and one run to notch his first save of the year.
Portland and Altoona play the middle game of their series on Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 PM from Blair County Ballpark. Notes...Tonight's game was delayed 16 minutes due to rain...Lawson and RHP Jarod Plummer are the last two losing pitchers for the Sea Dogs and they both allowed 8 runs...Exposito has hit safely in 5 of 6 games since joining Portland and picked up his first Double-A 3-hit game...Daniel Nava and Jon Still each doubled for the Sea Dogs - Still leads the Eastern League in doubles with 34.
