New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Erie's Thad Weber turned in an impressive start and his offense backed him with 12 hits as the SeaWolves survived a ninth-inning comeback attempt by the Rock Cats for a 5-3 win on Tuesday night.

The Rock Cats made some noise in the bottom of the ninth when Erik Lis slugged a solo homer to cut the SeaWovles lead to two. The Rock Cats loaded up the bases in the ninth when Brian Dinkelman walked, Steve Singleton singled, and Yancarlos Ortiz was hit by a pitch. With one out, the Rock Cats sent pinch hitter Toby Gardenhire to the plate, but he struck out and Brandon Roberts followed by grounding to second to end the rally and the game.

Weber (6-3) limited the Rock Cats to two runs on six hits through 7 2/3 innings. He was given an early lead to work with when Erie's Deik Scram laced a triple to right field off of Cole DeVries to knock in Cale Iorg and Ryan Strieby for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Brennan Boesch slammed his league leading 25th home run over the right field wall in the third to put the SeaWolves ahead, 3-0.

The Rock Cats got on the board when Dinkelman opened the bottom of the fifth with a single to center, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a base hit by Ortiz.

Erie tacked on two more runs in the sixth with an RBI single by Max St. Pierre and an RBI double by Santo De Leon that knocked in St. Pierre.

Lis delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth that plated Rene Tosoni, who reached base on a single, but he was picked off at second with Dinkelman at bat to end the inning.

DeVries (7-12) allowed five runs on eight hits through 5 2/3 innings. The bullpen trio of Alex Burnett, Kyle Waldrop, and Frank Mata combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief to keep the Rock Cats within striking distance.
