Aerodynamics... Back at It...The Aeros enjoyed an off-day yesterday but get back to the grind this evening against Connecticut, Akron's first-place counterparts from the Northern Division. Akron took two of three from the Defenders at Canal Park last week, with both wins coming in walk-off fashion and all three games being decided by just one run. Connecticut held off a pair of late rallies from the Aeros to claim game one of the series last Tuesday, but 1B Beau Mills recorded the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday and DH Matt McBride ripped a walk-off double to left-center the next night to give Akron the series victory. Both clubs enter tonight's tilt with healthy leads in their respective divisions, with the Aeros eight games in front of Reading in the South and Connecticut holding a 9.5-game edge over Portland in the North.
Sunday Not So Funday...Akron was unable to close its six-game home stand on a high note Sunday, falling to the New Britain Rock Cats 4-1 in the rubber match of the three-game series. RHP Connor Graham struggled with his command from the outset, walking four of the first 11 hitters he faced and seeing three of those runners come home to score. The Aeros also did themselves no favors on the base paths, short-circuiting early rallies by running into an out at home plate in the bottom of the first and then making the first out in the bottom of the second inning at third base. Missing out on those early chances enabled struggling New Britain starter Matt Fox to settle into a nice groove, retiring 15 of 16 hitters (including 11 in a row) from the second through seventh innings and eventually earning his first win since June 18th. Akron finished hitless with runners in scoring position (0-5) and stranded eight runners on base in the defeat, finishing 3-3 on the home stand.
New Face...The Aeros made a swap of left-handed starters today, as LHP Bobby Livingston was promoted to Class AAA Columbus and LHP Scott Barnes has joined the club from Class A Kinston. Livingston made seven starts for Akron and went 2-4 with a 5.91 ERA in his time with the Aeros. He turned in four quality starts, including his last two outings at Binghamton (6.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER) and against Connecticut (7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER). Barnes was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Ryan Garko July 28th. Ranked as the no.-9 prospect in the Giants system by Baseball America entering this season, Barnes opened the year with Class A San Jose and was 12-3 with a 2.85 ERA prior to the trade. He also racked up 99 strikeouts and walked only 29 in 98.0 innings, holding California League hitters to a .227 batting average. He made three starts for the K-Tribe prior to today's move, getting a no-decision each time out despite allowing just three earned runs in 12.2 innings (a 2.13 ERA).
Did You Know...This series will offer a study in contrasts as to what "home field advantage" really means. Connecticut is 18 games over .500 despite going just 26-24 at home, while the Aeros have the best road mark in the Southern Division at 33-23.
