Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders returned home after their longest distance road-trip of the season only to turn around and face off against the Southern Division leader again. Akron continued their winning ways against Connecticut taking game one of the three game series by the final of 6-4 Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.

The Aeros used a three run fifth to get ahead for good. After two walks and an error, C-Carlos Santana ripped a two RBI double followed by a 1B-Matt McBride sac fly to lock in the lead.

Akron went in front in the second as Santana slapped a three bagger into the right centerfield alleyway and was graciously awarded with a SS-Carlos Rivero RBI single.

Connecticut evened things up in the fourth with back to back doubles by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Brandon Crawford.

Trailing 4-1, the Defenders trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. After loading the bases on an Akron error, 2B-Brock Bond drove in a run with a fielder's choice then 3B-Brad Boyer did the same with a groundout.

The Aeros expanded their lead in the sixth after receiving back to back walks and two RBI single down the leftfield line by CF-Jose Constanza.

The Defenders pushed another run across the plate in the seventh with a LaTorre sac fly that drove in CF-Mike Mooney who tripled to right but that was all. Connecticut would receive a leadoff double by Crawford in the ninth but Aeros' reliever RHP-Carlton Smith retired the next three in order to earn his third save of the season.

Defenders' starter LHP-Jesse English (7-7) took the loss allowing five runs-three earned off of five hits while walking five and striking out one. Akron's starter RHP-Josh Tomlin (11-8) had better success allowing four runs-three earned off of six hits, one walk and five strikeouts over seven innings.

The two number one teams collide again tomorrow with the Defenders throwing RHP-Daryl Maday (5-3) up against the Aeros RHP-Scott Barnes who is making his Double A debut since he was recently apart of the deal the sent 1B-Ryan Garko to San Francisco. First pitch is slated for 6:35pm.

Wednesday is UBS Financial Senior Citizen Day with all seniors receiving tickets for just $3 as well as Norwich Bulletin Bring Your Buddy night where fans can bring a buddy for FREE with a coupon out of the newspaper.
