Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Midwest League have announced that infielder Jovan Rosa has been named the Midwest Player of the Week for the week of July 20-26. Rosa hit .364 for the week, having hit safely in all six games. The second-year Chief clubbed two homers, including a grand slam, and drove 11 runs. He also scored four runs, doubled twice and slugged at a .727 clip. Interestingly enough Josh Harrison, who switched roster spots with Rosa on July 8, was named the Florida State League's Player of the Week after hitting .423 with six runs and five RBI to go along with seven stolen bases with Daytona.
Rosa, a 22nd round pick by the Cubs in the 2006 draft, joined the team on July 8 when Harrison was promoted to Daytona. In 19 games with the Chiefs in 2009, the 21 year-old is hitting .310 with two homers and 16 RBIs. He also has four doubles with Peoria this season, a year after setting the franchise record with 43 two-baggers in 2008. Rosa drove in all five runs in a Chiefs 5-0 win on July 23 against Lansing, and later in the week brought home six in a Chiefs 12-5 thumping of Wisconsin. The Peoria corner infielder played in 128 games for the Chiefs last season and hit .293 with seven homers and a team-leading 81 RBI.
Harrison moved up to Class-A Advanced Daytona on July 8 before appearing in 79 games for Peoria. Upon his departure, Harrison led the league with 102 hits and was third in the MWL with a .337 batting average. The 2008 sixth round pick out of the University of Cincinnati scored 51 runs and still leads the team with seven triples and 16 steals. Since joining Daytona, Harrison is batting .288 with a homer and nine driven in to go along with 10 stolen bases in just 17 games.
Rosa is the second Chiefs player to win the honor this season after Josh Vitters was named the player of the week from May 18-24. In that week, Vitters homered in four straight games and collected at least three this in five straight contests. The Chiefs continue a 10-game road trip Wednesday night in Dayton after taking the series opener 4-3 Tuesday night. RH Chris Archer (3-4, 2.48) takes the mound for the Chiefs opposed by Dragons RH J.C. Sulbaran (2-2, 4.85). The broadcast can be heard beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45 CST on both 96.5 FM ESPN Radio and www.peoriachiefs.com
