
Cougars Blanked in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the seventh time in the month of July, the Kane County Cougars were unable to score a run. They were shut out, 4-0, Wednesday night by the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 2,841 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The series is tied at one win each and concludes Thursday. The Cougars are 12-15 in July with two games left, guaranteed of their first losing month of the season.
The Cougars had only five hits, three of which came from Mike Spina, who belted a double and singled twice. Leonardo Gil and Jeremy Barfield also singled, and Franklin Hernandez walked to help the meager attack. The Cougars stranded five and went 1-2-3 five times.
Starter Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (2-5) suffered the loss. He gave up two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings, walked none and fanned three in the hard-luck defeat. Matt Fitts relieved him in the sixth and faced the minimum in the seventh before yielding two in the eighth for the 4-0 final. Buddy Boshers (1-0) notched the victory, and Andrew Taylor posted his fourth save.
The Cougars (15-17, 56-46) and Kernels (18-13, 58-43) conclude the three-game set Thursday night at 6:35 CT. Shawn Haviland (6-7, 4.35) will face Ryan Chaffee (6-4, 3.17).
