Former Tiger Matt Nokes to Visit Fifth Third Ballpark

Former Tigers' All-Star catcher Matt Nokes will be on hand at Fifth Third Ballpark during West Michigan's 7:00 p.m. game against Cedar Rapids on Friday, July 31 as the Whitecaps continue their Wendy's Tiger Fridays series.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a Matt Nokes bobblehead. He will be available to sign autographs from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.

Nokes spent 11 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1985 to 1995. He played with the Tigers from 1986 to 1990 then finished his career playing for the Giants, Yankees, Orioles and Rockies. In 1987, Nokes batted .289 with 32 home runs and 87 RBI. That year he was named an All-Star as well as an American League Silver Slugger for being the best offensive catcher in the league.

The Whitecaps will hold their last Wendy's Tiger Friday on August 28 during their 7:00 p.m. game against Fort Wayne. Willie Hernandez, Dan Petry and Milt Wilcox will be at the ballpark to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Detroit's 1984 World Series championship. The first 1,000 fans on August 28 will receive Detroit Tigers 1984 World Series hats. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.

Nokes will be the fourth former Tiger to visit the ballpark this season as part of Wendy's Tiger Fridays. Rick Leach, Dave Bergman and John Wockenfuss have each visited Fifth Third Ballpark this season.

The Whitecaps continue their 10-game homestand tonight against the Burlington Bees at 7:00 p.m. Individual and group tickets are on sale and can be purchased at the West Michigan Glass Block Ticket Office at Fifth Third Ballpark, by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or by visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
