Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - A leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning from Dee Gordon gave the Great Lakes Loons a lead they would never relinquish in a 4-2 win over the Beloit Snappers in the middle game of a three-game set at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night.
Gordon finished the game 2-for-4, while Jaime Pedroza had another perfect night at the plate, doubling twice, walking twice and scoring a run. He is now 4-for-4 and has not made an out in eight plate appearances in the first two games of the series against Beloit.
Alfredo Silverio delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit, a two-run, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. That hit gave Loons starting pitcher Josh Walter a 3-0 lead to work with on the mound.
Walter (7-3) allowed only one run on five hits in five innings to pick up the win. He is now 4-2 since moving into the starting rotation at the end of May and the Loons are 8-2 in the 10 games he has started.
Geison Aguasviva pitched three innings out of the bullpen in relief of Walter, limiting Beloit to only one run on three hits. He stranded runners at the corners in the sixth and snared a grounder back up the middle to start a 1-5-4 inning-ending double play in the seventh. Cole St. Clair picked up his second save in as many nights and his eighth of the season with a scoreless ninth inning of work.
Anthony Hatch hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Loons final run of the night.
Daniel Berlind took the loss for the Snappers, allowing all four Loons runs on five hits in five innings of work. The Snappers' bullpen kept Great Lakes scoreless over the final three innings, allowing only three hits and recording five strikeouts.
The Loons and Snappers wrap up their three-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Bobby Blevins (7-7, 3.94) starts for Great Lakes against Beloit southpaw Daniel Osterbrock (4-9, 5.90). Dodgers legend Maury Wills, the 1962 National League MVP who is a special instructor for the organization, will be at Dow Diamond and will participate in several activities during the night, including appearing on the Loons On Deck Circle powered by Dow Corning beginning at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN 100.9 FM. Wills will also sign autographs and meet fans on the concourse after the start of the fifth inning. Tickets are available for tomorrow's game by calling 989-837-BALL or at Loons.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
