Peoria Chiefs News Release
Dayton, OH -The Peoria Chiefs saved the best for last for the second night in a row, scoring 10 runs in the top of the ninth for an improbable 13-7 win over the Dayton Dragons Wednesday night. The rally and win gives the Chiefs a seven-game win streak, a 17-15 mark on the second half and a 55-46 record on the season.
Trailing 7-3 into the ninth, the Chiefs rallied for the second night in a row against the Dragons bullpen. Junior Lake started the inning with a double inside the bag at third. Nelson Perez singled off Mark James to score Lake for a 7-4 ballgame. Drew Rundle worked a walk and Ryan Flaherty made it 7-5 with a single to center. Aguido Gonzalez, who blew the save and took the loss Tuesday night, relieved James with still no outs. Rebel Ridling greeted Gonzalez with a RBI single to right as Flaherty moved to third. With Kyler Burke batting, catcher Jordan Wideman blocked a pitch in the dirt and tried to pick Flaherty off third. They throw bounced and was deflected toward the Dragons dugout as Flaherty scored to tie the game 7-7.
With pinch-runner David Macias at second, Burke walked D.J. LeMahieu reached on a bunt single that was deflected foul by third baseman Carlos Mendez. Jovan Rosa drew a bases loaded walk to force home Macias and give the Chiefs their first lead of the night at 8-7. Donnie Joseph relieved Gonzalez with the bases still loaded and gave up a RBI single to Michael Brenly. Lake's second hit of the inning brought home two more and put the Chiefs up 11-7. Joseph finally got a pair of outs before Flaherty tripled home another two and gave the Chiefs a 13-7 lead. Kevin Kreier (4-2) gave up a single to lead off the bottom of the ninth but retired the next three to preserve the win.
Chiefs' starter Chris Archer couldn't get through the first inning as the Dragons offense put six runs on the board. A leadoff walk to Josh Fellhauer was quickly erased by a 6-4-3 double play. Mendez and Byron Wiley reached on consecutive singles and then pulled off a double steal as rain began to fall. Archer lost command as he walked Cody Puckett to load the bases and after getting ahead of Yun-Wen Kuo 1-2 threw three straight balls to force in the game's first run. Humberto Sosa broke the game open and cleared the bases with a double to right-center for a 4-0 Dragons lead. Alberto Cabrera relieved Archer and gave up a RBI single to Wideman. A wild pitch moved Wideman into scoring position before Alex Oliveras made it 6-0 with a double to right. Cabrera finally retired Fellhauer on a flyout to left to end the frame with 10 Dragons coming to the plate.
The Chiefs struck back immediately in the downpour against Dragons starter Juan Carlos Sulbaren. Sulbaren, who picked up a save in the Futures Game and pitched in both the 2008 Olympics and 2009 World Baseball Classic, gave up a one-out single to Rosa. A wild pitch moved Rosa to second and Brenly single to put runners on the corners. Another wild pitch moved to Brenly to second as Rosa held his ground at third. Lake then put the Chiefs on the board with a sacrifice fly to deep left. Sulbaren recovered to strike out Perez and leave Brenly in scoring position.
Trailing 6-1 Rosa led off the Chiefs fourth with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center. With one down, Lake tripled to the wall in left before Perez struck out again. Rundle pulled the Chiefs to within three at 6-3 with a single to right field. Sulbaren escaped the inning when Flaherty grounded out to first.
Dayton extended their lead in the fifth against Cabrera. Coddington walked to leadoff in the inning and he moved up on a groundout and wild pitch. Puckett made it 7-3 with a solid single to left for his team-leading 54th RBI of the season.
In the Chiefs shortest start of the season, Archer allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in just 2/3 of an inning. Cabrera allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four in four 1/3 innings of work. Marcus Hatley allowed just one hit while striking out two in his two shutout innings. Kreier allowed two hits and struck out one in his two shutout innings.
