Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - The strong pitching of the Clinton LumberKings hit a snag against the Swing of the Quad Cities Tuesday night. Lefty starter Michael Kirkman lasted only 3 2/3 innings, and reliever Cain Byrd surrendered a 3-run home run to the Swing's Adam Rodgers in an 8-3 loss at John O'Donnell Stadium.
Kirkman (0-1) struggled in his first LumberKings outing, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and walking four. He faced 23 Swing batters in just 3 2/3 innings of work. Right-hander Cain Byrd came on from the bullpen and worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Rodgers delivered the big blast.
Rodgers was 2-for-4 on the night, scoring two runs and knocking in four. The home run was his first of the season. Leftfielder A.J. Van Slyke was 2-for-5, and catcher Brandon Yarbrough doubled twice in the Swing victory.
LumberKings leftfielder K.C. Herren accounted for all three Clinton runs on the evening. In the second, Herren doubled home Truan Mehl and later scored on Jose Vallejo's RBI groundout. Herren's two-out RBI single an inning later represented the last run of the night for the LumberKings.
The two teams will finish the 3-game series tonight, game-time set for 6:30 pm. Kyle Rogers (0-1, 5.40) gets the start for Clinton against Swing starter Phillip Anderson (0-1, 10.38).
