Swing rally for comeback victory
April 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities came up big late in a come-from-behind victory at John O'Donnell Stadium Wednesday night, rallying to beat the Clinton Lumberkings, 5-4.
Quad Cities (4-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead and the three-game series. The Swing record is now above .500 for the first time this season.
Trailing 4-2, Bryan Anderson started the rally with his second single of the game. After a pitching change, Charles Carter chipped in his first base hit of the season, and Calvin Hayes coaxed a full-count walk to load the bases with nobody out. Shortstop Casey Rowlett then hammered an opposite-field double - his second of the game - down the right field line to drive in a pair and tie the game at four. One out later A.J. Van Slyke lifted a high fly ball to left field, and when Hayes came home ahead of an off-target throw the Swing owned a 5-4 lead.
Playing shortstop for the second straight night, and hitting leadoff for the first time this season, Rowlett was 2-for-4 on the day with two doubles and three RBI. The top and bottom of the order came up big for the Swing, as the three through six hitters in the lineup combined to go 0-for-13 with one RBI.
After three scoreless innings, Clinton scored first in the top of the fourth. Starter Phillip Andersen retired the first nine men he faced in order, but ran into a bumpy start the second time through the lineup. Matt Smith walked to lead off the frame, and would come home one out later on Johnny Whittleman's double off the wall in right field.
In the bottom half of the inning, Quad Cities evened things up in a similar fashion. As the batting order got their second crack at Clinton starter Kyle Rogers, Rowlett started things off with a double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he would tie the game at one on a Colby Rasmus groundout.
The LumberKings then took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth. After the Swing pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning, Clinton extended the lead to 4-2 on a homer by Freddie Thon.
Reliever Jason Cairns (1-0) took the win for the Swing, striking out one in a perfect top of the eighth. Scott Vander Weg (2) made things interesting in the top of the ninth, before striking out Smith to end the game with men on first and second.
Swing starter Phillip Andersen pitched well but struggled in stretches. The righthander had allowed one run on one hit through five innings, but was touched for three runs on four hits in his last 1.1 frames. In all, Andersen gave up four runs on five hits in 6.1 innings, striking out five and walking one.
Kevin Altman (0-1) picked up the loss for Clinton, as he was tagged for two runs on two hits in the decisive eighth inning. Starter Kyle Rogers pitched 5.2 solid frames for the LumberKings, allowing two runs on two hits and leaving in line for the win.
