Bees Even Series with Cougars

Burlington Bees News Release

Geneva, IL (April 11, 2006) - Rayner Oliveros allowed just one run in seven innings and Miguel Vega homered and drove in two to lead the Burlington Bees (3-3) to a 6-3 win over the Kane County Cougars (3-3) at Elfstrom Stadium tonight. The Bees even this series at a game apiece with the rubber match tomorrow afternoon.

Oliveros (1-0) matched his career-high for innings pitched and allowed just one run on four hits while walking three and striking out four. The only run against him came on a solo homer by Frank Martinez to lead off the fourth. His seven innings is the longest outing by a Bees' pitcher this season and the starters are now 3-1 for the year.

The offense gave Oliveros a lead early with two runs in the top of the second. Kiel Thibault singled to extend his hitting streak to five games, but was erased on a force out as Carlos Arroyo reached on a fielder's choice. Arroyo moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a triple by Jeremy Jirschele. It was the first triple by a Bee this season and Jirschele's first career extra-base hit. Vega followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0. In the third, the Bees loaded the bases with one out for Thibault who dropped a wind-blown single into center for an RBI before Arroyo drove in a second run with a bounce out to first for a 4-0 lead. Vega led off the top of the fourth inning with a monstrous home run off the batters' eye in straightaway center. It was the first home run for a Bee this year. The Bees added their final run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Chris McConnell snapped an 0-15 streak to start the year with a double down the left field line and scored on a two-out single by Arroyo. All six runs came against Cougars' starter Trey Shields (1-1). Brad Davis and Steve Sharpe each pitched two perfect innings in relief to finish the game for the Cougars.

The Cougars made a late comeback attempt in the eighth against Eliezer Garcia. Martinez reached on a throwing error by Jirschele at third to start the inning and Jeff Baisley walked. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third before another walk to Raul Padron loaded the bases. Martinez scored and the other runners advanced on a slow chopper to third by Jeff Bieker and Wes Long popped out to first for the second out. After Garcia issued another walk to Anthony Recker, the Bees turned to Chris Hayes to get out of the jam. Hayes got Justin Sellers to ground out to second to end the inning and then struck out the side in the ninth for his first affiliated save. Hayes saved nine games for the Windy City Thunderbolts of the independent Frontier League last year.

The Bees and Cougars wrap up this series with a noon game at Elfstrom Stadium tomorrow afternoon. RH Matt Kniginyzky (1-0, 1.50) will start for the Bees against RH Vince Mazzaro (1-0, 3.60) for the Cougars. The game will be broadcast live on 1360 The Ticket ONLY, with the pre-game show starting at 11:40.
