Devil Rays End Up All Wet

April 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays dropped a rain-soaked Wednesday morning game to the Fort Wayne Wizards by a final of 8-1 At C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek. In a contest delayed twice by precipitation, Matt Spring gave the Rays the early lead with a two-out, solo home run in the 2nd off of Wizard righty Stevie Delabar.

Rays starter Jake McGee surrendered two unearned runs in the 3rd on a groundout RBI by Seth Johnston and a Daryl Jones run-scoring single. McGee was lifted after an hour-long delay in the 4th, having tossed four innings while yielding the two unearned runs. He allowed five hits, walked two and fanned five.

For the first time this season, the Rays' bullpen disappointed. Drew Bigda was charged with a run in his three frames of work. Billy Evers got into a jam in the 8th, walking in a run. He issued three free passes and allowed a double in just 1/3 inning. Greg Dupas came on and immediately served up a grand slam to Fort Wayne's Mike Baxter. It was the first gopher ball for the Rays' staff this season.

The only other hit for the D-Rays was a Rhyne Hughes single in the 9th. The two hits marked a new season low.

The win went to Kyle Pawelczyk, who tossed two shutout, no-hit innings with a walk, a strikeout and a hit batsman. Alfredo Fernandez, Jon Link and Neil Jamison combined for the remaining five frames. Jamison fanned the side in the 9th.

The loss halts the Rays' two-game winning streak. The Rays hit the road for seven games in eight days, beginning with a 6:35pm contest at West Michigan on Thursday.
