Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
April 12, 2006 - Jordan Renz ended a season-long slump with a three-run homer in the sixth inning as the Kernels deafeated Peoria 7-3 in front of 1,263 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night. Renz, who struck out in his first two plate appearances of the night, had been mired in an 0-for-13 slump that included 10 strikeouts before depositing a hanging slider from Roberto Sotolongo (0-1) onto the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion in left field. The blast also propelled the Kernels into after trailing 3-2 heading into the inning. The three-run clout helped make a winner out of right-hander Nick Adenhart in his Veterans Memorial Stadium debut. The 19-year-old prospect allowed four hits over six innings and struck out six while walking only one. He surrendered three runs on a Jesus Valdez homer in the fourth.
A pair of relative newcomers came out of the bullpen to help the Kernels lock up their third victory of the season. Brok Butcher, who joined the team on April 10, made his professional debut with a scoreless seventh inning and Tim Mattison, who also was not on the team's Opening Day roster, blanked the Chiefs for the final two innings to earn his first save of the season.
Renz was 2-for-4 at the plate and also had an RBI double in the eighth inning when the Kernels added a pair of insurance runs off Peoria reliever Ed Campusano. Flint Wipke singled home Renz with a shot up the middle. The Kernels scored their first run of the night in the third when Wipke walked, moved to third on a single by Brad Coon, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Larry Infante. Coon helped the Kernels continue to chip away at the Peoria lead when he ignited a twoout rally by drawing a walk and stealing second before being plated on an Infante single.
