Burlington Bees News Release

Geneva, IL (April 12, 2006) - In a game with four lead changes, Frank Martinez' two-run homer in the seventh inning pushed the final tilt in favor of the Kane County Cougars (4-3) for an 8-6 victory over the Burlington Bees (3-4) at Elfstrom Stadium this afternoon. With the win, the Cougars win the series two games to one.

The Bees scored first in each game of the series, getting on the board against Cougars' starter Vince Mazzaro with two runs in the top of the third inning. Ethien Santanan led off with an infield single and went to third on a base hit by Antonio Sabatini. Josh Johnson drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to left. Chris McConnell followed with an infield single setting up Mario Lisson for an RBI base hit to left.

The Cougars answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning off of Bees' starter Matt Kniginyzky. Three straight singles loaded the bases and Mike Massaro drove in the first run with a bounce out to first. After a popout, Martinez drove in two with a single to right to put the Cougars up 3-2 and then scored on a single by Jeff Biecker.

The Bees got one run back in the fourth and took the lead back in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Carlos Arroyo singled and J.P. Lowen launched his first professional home run over the wall in right to put the Bees ahead 5-4. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fifth when Massaro doubled with one out, moved to third on a bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.

The bullpens took over for both teams in the sixth inning. Ron Madej walked two in the sixth for the Cougars, but stranded the runners. Gilbert De La Vara got out of the sixth when a perfect relay throw cut down Raul Padron at the plate trying to score from first on a double to right. In the bottom of the seventh, Wes Long led off with a single and was at third with two outs when Martinez belted his home run to left. It was his second home run in as many days, with the switch-hitter getting one from each side of the plate.

The Bees rallied in the eighth. With runners at first and third and two outs, Wilber Perez booted a ground ball by Chris McConnell that allowed Antonio Sabatini to score and Johnson to move to second. The inning ended when Johnson was thrown out trying to steal third. The Cougars added an insurance run against Yovany Damico in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single by Steve Kleen, who finished 3-4 in the game. John Herrera finished the eighth for Madej and retired the Bees in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.

The Bees return to Community Field tomorrow night at 7:00 to start a three-game series with the Beloit Snappers to begin a seven-game home stand. LH Ryan DiPietro (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Bees against RH Adam Hawes (0-0, 0.00) for Beloit. The gates open at 6:00 for a Somberero Thirsty Thursday featuring two-for-$3 specials on cans of beer and bottles of Pepsi products. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
