Lugnuts out to 6-0 lead after Dragons close to within two, pull away for 10-4 victory
Dayton, OH - For the second time in three nights, the Lansing Lugnuts (5-2) jumped out to an early lead putting the first six runs on the board. The Dragons fought back to within a pair at 6-4, before the Lugnuts pulled away late and picked up a 10-4 get away day win over the Dayton Dragons (2-5) in front of 7,884 Wednesday night.
At the beginning it looked like another pitcher's duel as Dragons' starter Carlos Fisher (LP, 0-1) allowed just one base runner through the first three innings. However, Fisher would run into trouble in the fourth. The inning started with a walk to Chris Gutierrez, followed by a base hit by Jacob Butler. Both runners would come around to score on a triple by Cory Patton to give the Lugnuts the 2-0 lead. After a pair of strikeouts, David Hicks and Yuber Rodriguez each laced a RBI single to put Lansing ahead 4-0.
The score would remain 4-0 through the 5th inning. Lansing starter Kristian Bell (WP, 2-0) was strong as he worked 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits, one walk, and striking out eight.
Jeff Stevens (ND), one two Dragons called up Wednesday from extended spring training, took over for Fisher in the fifth and got out of the inning allowing just one hit. Stevens would give up an RBI double in the top of the 6th to Jesus Gonzalez that scored Josh Bell from second base for the 5-0 Lansing lead. The Lugnuts would pick up another run in the 7th as Cory Patton hit a RBI single off of Brandon Camardese (ND) to score Manny Sena and give the Lugnuts the 6-0 advantage.
Dayton would dent the plate in the bottom of the 7th off Jordan Timm (ND). Mike DeJesus reached first base on a fielder's choice, and Mike Griffin was hit by a pitch. Paul Janish extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-1. With runners at first and third, Jay Bruce laced a line drive to left that Patton dropped, and the error allowed two runs to cross the plate. Relief pitcher Aaron Tressler (ND) struck out B.J. Szymanski to end the threat and hold the lead at 6-3.
Tressler would be touched up for a run in the 8th as the Dragons got back-to-back singles off the bats of Eric Eymann and Craig Tatum. Josh Holden picked up the RBI on a groundout, and Dayton drew closer at 6-4.
Bo Lanier (ND), the second of the new Dragons, pitched a solid 8th inning, but ran into trouble in the 9th. Sena walked, stole second, advanced to third on the throw that went into centerfield, and scored on a wild pitch to give Lansing the 7-4 lead. After Gutierrez walked, Butler grounded out, and Patton was intentionally walked. Jon George (ND) replaced Lanier and got the second out of the inning, a SAC fly to center that scored the eighth Lansing run of the night. The Lugntus added back-to-back RBI singles off George to close out the scoring at 10-4.
The Dragons open a three game series at Fort Wayne beginning with a 6:00 PM first pitch on Thursday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 5:30 PM. The game can also be heard live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com LHP Philippe Valiquette (1-0, 0.00 ERA) gets the start for the Dragons, while Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Grant Varnell (0-1, 3.60 ERA).
