Rock Chalk Jayhawk Goes Cougar

Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitcher Paul Smyth (pronounced "Smythe") has been added to the roster from Short-A Vancouver, while infielder Carlos Arrieche has been placed on the disabled list. Today's transaction keeps the Cougars' roster at 25 active players as the squad continues a four-game series at Elfstrom Stadium against the Beloit Snappers.

Smyth (35th Rd, 2009) becomes the sixth Oakland selection from the '09 draft to join the Cougars and the second draftee to arrive within the past four days. Smyth comes to the Cougars via Vancouver, where he pitched in 20 games out of the Canadians' bullpen. Reminiscent of former Cougars reliever Mickey Storey's statistics earlier this season in Kane County, Smyth did not allow an earned run during his time at Vancouver - pitching 29.1 scoreless innings, saving nine games and recording a WHIP of 0.55.

A four-year collegian at the University of Kansas, Smyth posted 27 saves as a Jayhawk and was named an All Big-12 Academic first team selection twice.
