Elmore and Hawks Walk Off with Win, Lead

August 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Jake Elmore's two run double in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 4-3 win over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The victory puts the Silver Hawks one game in front of the Dragons for the second half wild card spot with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

Trailing 3-2, the Silver Hawks rallied against Dayton closer Donnie Joseph (2-1) in their final at-bat. Alberto Diaz took the first pitch of the inning into center field for a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Isaias Asencio. Chris Davis hit a tapper in front of the plate, where Dayton catcher Chase Weems inexplicably threw to third trying to get Diaz instead of throwing to first. Diaz was safe, and runners were at the corners with one out.

Victor Estevez pinch ran for Davis, setting the stage for Elmore's heroics. On a 3-1 count, Elmore drilled the ball off the wall in left-center, scoring both Diaz and Estevez for South Bend's fourth walk off victory of the season.

The late rally took South Bend starter Eric Smith (ND) off the hook for a loss, one that he wouldn't have deserved. In his Silver Hawks debut, Smith tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three runs but only one earned. A second round pick by the Diamondbacks this summer, Smith struck out five in his first appearance with South Bend.

Victor Capellan (ND) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief to lower his ERA to 0.87, while Justin Mace (WP, 3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win.

South Bend had an early 2-0 lead after Alfredo Marte had a RBI single in the first and Davis hit a solo home run in the second against Dayton starter Ezequiel Infante (ND). It was Davis' third home run of the season.

Dayton tied the game in the third inning on two hits and two South Bend errors. Byron Wiley and Carlos Mendez each had RBIs for the Dragons as they knotted the game at 2-2.

The Dragons took the lead in the fifth inning when Kevyn Feiner hit a solo home run to left, his first of the season.

Game three of the important series between Dayton and South Bend takes place on Wednesday night with a 6:30 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Ryan Cook (11-9, 3.30 ERA) tries for his team leading 12th win against Dayton's RHP Jordan Hotchkiss (3-4, 2.88 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
