Whitecaps Try to Break the Curse of Bobby Layne

August 25, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

The West Michigan Whitecaps are showing their support for our friends on the east side of the state by holding our first ever Detroit Lions Day on Sunday, August 30 during our 2:00 p.m. game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

For those not familiar with the Curse of Bobby Layne, after the Lions won their last championship in 1957, they traded their star quarterback, Bobby Layne, to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Layne responded to the trade by saying Detroit "would not win for 50 years." Since Layne uttered those words, the Lions have made the playoffs only nine times the past 50 seasons.

Those 50 years have passed and the Whitecaps will try to help Detroit usher in a new era of Lions football.

Former Lions fullback Corey Schlesinger will be on hand to help crush the curse like he used to do against opposing linebackers. He'll also throw out the first pitch (with a football!), meet with fans and sign autographs from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Whitecaps are also offering ticket specials for Lions fans. Fans who wear Lions apparel will get $1.00 off a box or reserved seat and those who wear Joey Harrington or Charles Rogers jerseys will get $1.50 off a box or reserved seat. Fans can also get a free reserved seat if their first name is "Barry" or their last name is "Sanders" or if they were born in 1957.

There will also be plenty of Lions-related activities for fans to enjoy including a dunk tank to help wash away the memories of recent seasons, a pre-game punt, pass and kick area, a paper bag mask-making station and football related in-between inning promotions.

The Whitecaps return home Friday, August 28 to take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at 7:00 p.m. Individual and group tickets are on sale and can be purchased at the West Michigan Glass Block Ticket Office at Fifth Third Ballpark, by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or by visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
