Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons exploded for nine runs in the first two innings against Fort Wayne TinCaps' starting pitcher Dexter Carter and cruised to a 12-5 win in front of a sellout crowd of 5.686 fans at Dow Diamond on Tuesday night.

Kyle Russell drilled a three-run homer to cap a seven-run second inning, and Anthony Hatch had three hits and three RBIs to pace the Loons offensive attack. Five players - Jaime Pedroza, Nick Buss, Hatch, Alfredo Silverio and Esteban Lopez - scored twice as Great Lakes evened the four-game series with Fort Wayne at a win apiece.

Josh Walter (10-4) was again the beneficiary of the Loons' offensive outburst, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs on three hits. In his last two starts, the Loons have scored 30 runs.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Loons immediately answered with a two-spot to claim a lead they would never relinquish. Hatch delivered a run with a one-out triple, and he scored on a groundout by Russell for a 2-1 lead.

Silverio led off the big second inning with a single and scored on a triple by the next batter, Joe Becker, for a 3-1 edge. A pair of walks sandwiched around a strikeout loaded the bases with one out for Buss. He singled to score Becker, then Hatch delivered a two-run single to make it a 6-1 game, setting the stage for Russell's blast on the first pitch of his at-bat to give Great Lakes a 9-1 lead.

Fort Wayne scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth to pull to within 9-4, but the Loons scored three in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Lopez and a two-run home run to left-center by Pedroza for a 12-4 lead. The TinCaps plated their final run in the top of the ninth.

Robert Boothe pitched the final three innings to earn his second save of the year, allowing a pair of runs on five hits. Roberto Feliciano allowed an unearned run in the sixth in his only inning of work.

Colin Lynch and Allen Harrington starred out of the TinCaps bullpen, working a combined five scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out eight in relief of Carter, who allowed nine earned runs on eight hits and three walks in his second consecutive poor start. Zach Herr worked the eighth and allowed the Loons final three runs on three hits, though he did strike out the side.

Game three of the four-game series between the Loons and TinCaps is set for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Bobby Blevins (9-9, 4.10) takes the hill for the Loons against TinCaps right-hander Erik Davis (13-6, 3.81) on Salute to the Arts Night at Dow Diamond.
