Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Jake Elmore lined a double to left-center field to drive in the tying and winning runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The win moved the Silver Hawks ahead of the Dragons by one game in the wildcard playoff race.
The Dragons took a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Dayton closer Donnie Joseph (2-1) allowed a lead-off single to Alberto Diaz, and Diaz went to second on a sacrifice. With one out, Chris Davis hit a tapper in front of the plate. Dragons catcher Chase Weems fielded the ball and threw to third, but Diaz beat the throw to leave runners at first and third. Elmore then drilled a 3-1 pitch from Joseph to the fence in left-center to drive in both runners and end the game.
South Bend (27-30) now leads Dayton (26-31) by one game in the wildcard race with 12 games to play. The two teams still have five head-to-head meetings among the final 12 including games in South Bend Wednesday and Thursday.
South Bend got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, collecting four singles against Dragons starting pitcher Ezequiel Infante including a run-scoring hit with two outs by Alfredo Marte. They added another run in the second on a solo home run by Chris Davis.
Dayton started back in the third, taking advantage of two Silver Hawks throwing errors to score twice in the inning to tie the game at 2-2. Byron Wiley drove in the first run with a bases loaded ground out and Carlos Mendez delivered a run-scoring single to even the score.
Kevyn Feiner belted a solo home run for Dayton in the fifth to break the tie and give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.
Infante worked the first five innings and bounced back from a rough start. He allowed seven hits and two runs with one walk and two strikeouts and left with a 3-2 lead.
Reliever Chase Ware replaced Infante and fired three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with no walks and a strikeout before turning it over to Joseph to start the ninth.
Dayton finished with seven hits. Mendez and Alex Oliveras each had two.
The Dragons meet South Bend again on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Jordan Hotchkiss (3-4, 2.88) will start for Dayton. The next home game is Friday at 7:00 against the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Field.
